Social-emotional learning - SEL - is essential for youth success
Young people’s social-emotional learning is a dynamic and complex process that happens within the context of their culture. It is essential for forming a person’s identity and sense of wellbeing.
Fortunately, afterschool and mentoring programs can help. By intentionally embedding SEL in our work, we can help young people develop SEL skills that will support their success.
Propel SEL Flipped the Script on Professional Development:
Growing out of a three-year journey, Propel SEL is a new way to support staff of afterschool and mentoring programs to transform the way they see, think and do SEL.
Propel SEL engaged the community and youth to identify and understand SEL needs and then piloted a year-long cohort based professional development experience by building the capacity of regional afterschool intermediaries and youth serving organizations – all grounded in an equity and identity lens.
The story of Propel SEL and the impact on afterschool and mentoring programs can be found in the Propel SEL: Flipping the Script report and Propel SEL: Community Engagement Summary below.
