DESIGN THE DAY

A successful day involves students arriving smoothly, activities starting and ending on time, and everyone knowing where to go and what to do. And it also includes an intentional focus on putting young people at the center.

Reflect

As you work with your partner(s) to design a calendar and daily schedule, think about:

  • How will you incorporate young people’s voices into your daily schedule? What about input from families, teachers and staff?
  • Have you included an intentional focus on social-emotional learning (SEL)? What about culture and identity?
  • Where’s the fun? Does your plan include time and space for activities that spark wonder and delight? Does your plan include learning outside the building (could be as simple as outdoor lessons)?
  • What field trips will you take this summer? (Be sure to plan early!) What interactive assignments or activities will you do during the field trip to connect back to your on-site program goals and learning?
  • What transition times (busing, meal and restroom breaks, snack times) need to be built into the schedule? Are there specific site details that should be considered?
