Hope Community: Sit in to Breathe, A Youth-Led Protest

After George Floyd was killed last year, three teens at Hope Community stepped up to lead a youth-led day of peaceful protest at the Minnesota State Capitol.

About the Program

Hope Community is a Minneapolis-based non-profit dedicated to transforming an urban-core neighborhood through housing, public spaces and community connections. Over the past 40+ years their work has resulted in a dramatic turnaround in an area where most people thought change could never take hold. Their work is grounded in equity, diversity, social justice and systems change.

Hope Community was a recipient of a grant from the Greater Twin Cities United Way's Greater Twin Cities COVID-19 Response & Recovery Fund, which was created to provide immediate support to those who were most vulnerable to difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Part of that effort included Student Support & Family Empowerment Grants awarded to eight non-profit organizations that partnered with local schools to provide basic needs, academic support and mental health resources to students who were disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 disruptions and challenges. These organizations include: Boys and Girls Club Little Earth, Boys and Girls Club Mt. Airy, Centro Tyrone Guzman, Communidades Latinas Unidas En Servicio (CLUES), Hope Community, Neighborhood House, North Star Network and Wilder Mental Health & Wellness.
