What is Lights On Afterschool?
Lights On Afterschool takes a day, October 22nd, 2015 to celebrate the learning, engagement and fun that occur every day in Afterschool programs around the country. Launched in October 2000, Lights on Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities. In Minnesota we recognize Lights On Afterschool as an opportunity to remind everyone in our communities about the great things that happen afterschool for the 140,000 Minnesota youth that participate in afterschool and summer learning programs.
Tomorrow is Minnesota’s opportunity to tell our own story about how afterschool is important across the state. As a network we have the ability to use the power of pictures, social media (#LoAMN15), engaging community events, and youth voice to share the importance of afterschool. Let’s use all of these approaches to share our story about the power of afterschool with every person engaged at an event or through media.
How Can You Celebrate LoAMN Tomorrow?
- Engage with us on social media via the hashtag #LoAMN15- make sure to share pictures and quotes from your LoA Events. The hashtag will also document every event across the state, making it easy to see how your community fits in to the big picture! We created some sample social media posts for you to join in the conversation. Click here to learn more.
- Play this two-minute video message from Senator Al Franken at your Lights On Afterschool event and share it on social media! In the video, Senator Franken speaks to Minnesota’s youth and the adults that support them, by wishing them a happy Lights on Afterschool and encouraging them to continue learning. Here is the link to download it via Dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/s/vkzk2n0f8tx1eze/100815_FRANKENmp4?dl=0
